Music and the brain: Multisensory integration in music production and perception
نویسنده
چکیده
I propose that we study music and the brain for our student topic. Since music and the brain is a very broad topic, I suggest that we focus on multisensory integration between the auditory and motor modalities in the production and perception of music. In the following proposal I will give a background to the broad topic of music and the brain by briefly discussing the role that music plays in brain development and how music may be used to treat various disorders and deficits. In my opinion, one of the most interesting aspects of music and the brain is the role of multisensory integration, or cross-modal coordination, in production and perception. For this topic I propose that we read and discuss Schneider 2002 to illustrate neurophysiological and structural differences in the auditory cortex of musicians and non-musicians, Baumann 2007 for an overview of an audiomotor coordination network that exists in professional musicians, and Lahav 2007 to understand the role that mirror neurons may play in a human audiomotor recognition network. By understanding how music is integrated across different modalities, we will be better equipped to understand the underlying mechanisms of music in production and perception, as well as in development and therapy.

Language, Music, and Brain
Introduction: Over the last centuries, scientists have been trying to figure out how the brain is learning the language. By 1980, the study of brain-language relationships was based on the study of human brain damage. But since 1980, neuroscience methods have greatly improved. There is controversy about where music, composition, or the perception of language and music are in the brain, or wheth...
متن کاملNeural Correlates of Boredom in Music Perception
Introduction: Music can elicit powerful emotional responses, the neural correlates of which have not been properly understood. An important aspect about the quality of any musical piece is its ability to elicit a sense of excitement in the listeners. In this study, we investigated the neural correlates of boredom evoked by music in human subjects. Methods: We used EEG recording in nine sub...
متن کاملA neuroscientific perspective on music therapy.
During the last years, a number of studies demonstrated that music listening (and even more so music production) activates a multitude of brain structures involved in cognitive, sensorimotor, and emotional processing. For example, music engages sensory processes, attention, memory-related processes, perception-action mediation ("mirror neuron system" activity), multisensory integration, activit...

Introduction: In recent years, music has been employed in many intervention and rehabilitation program to enhance cognitive abilities in patients. Numerous researches show that music therapy can help improving language skills in patients including hearing impaired. In this study, a new method of music training is introduced based on principles of neuroscience and capabilities of Persian languag...
متن کاملEmotional Perception of Music in Children with Unilateral Cochlear Implants
Introduction: Cochlear implantation (CI) improves language skills among children with hearing loss. However, children with CIs still fall short of fulfilling some other needs, including musical perception. This is often attributed to the biological, technological, and acoustic limitations of CIs. Emotions play a key role in the understanding and enjoyment of music. The present study aimed to in...
